POSITION SUMMARY

Aetna Digital is looking for a Lead SAFe Release Train Engineer to join our team in Burlington, Massachusetts; Denver, Colorado; or Hartford, Connecticut.

Fundamental Components:

The Lead Release Train Engineer will lead a team of Release Train Engineers (RTE) and also serve as the RTE for one Agile Release Train (ART). The Lead RTE will be responsible for developing a team of RTEs, including hiring, mentorship, and professional development.

The Release Train Engineer is a servant leader and coach for an Agile Release Train, a collection of scrum teams aligned to deliver on end-to-end business value. The RTEs major responsibilities include facilitation of ART events, managing train processes and assisting the teams in achieving their commitments. RTEs communicate with internal & external stakeholders, escalate impediments, help manage risk, and drive relentless improvement. Our RTEs will support trains that cover consumer-facing software development and new cloud-based platform.

This role reports to the Director of Scaled Agile Execution in Aetnas Digital Transformation Office (DTO), which is responsible for enabling successful program execution of Aetna's Digital Transformation roadmap across organizational boundaries, following Scaled Agile Frameworks (SAFe) principles.

Fundamental Components/Job Description:

The RTE facilitates ART processes and execution. They escalate impediments, manage risk, help ensure value delivery, and help drive relentless improvement. RTEs participate in the Lean-Agile transformation, coaching leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in those processes and mindsets.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE desired:

The Lead RTE will:

Manage a team of RTEs who each lead their own trains within the program

Encourages staff development by providing leadership and mentoring to RTEs

Conducts performance reviews for RTEs

Demonstrate best practices, leading by example for how the role of RTE is executed

In addition, this role will be required to perform all of the duties of an RTE:

Ensure effective operations across the 2-10 scrum teams aligned to the ART to ensure high-quality business value is delivered. Train-wide processes include:

Preparation for and facilitation of Train meetings and processes, including ART sync, Inspect & adapt, and quarterly release planning activities in Hartford, CT

Identify and pursue opportunities to fine-tune and improve Train execution; recommend enhancements related to new and/or existing workflows based on broad view of the organization and a Lean Agile mindset

Provide thought leadership and expertise across the team and with internal and external train partners in achieving their commitments through issue, risk and dependency management

Identify and drive efficiencies and best practices to ensure sound economic decisions made across the trains budget and time allocations

Demonstrate servant leadership by supporting teams in problem identification and decision-making

Manage and maintain train-level dashboard reporting to track execution for the team, train, and program leadership using tools like CA Agile Central

Coach teams and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and thinking to elevate the trains application of SAFe, creating an environment of mutual influence

Work closely with Product Management, Architecture, and User Experience experts as a member of ARTs execution leadership

Professional Qualifications:

Five years of Agile leadership experience with proven Agile and facilitation skills

Experience filling the role of RTE at Aetna, or another organization using SAFe

Experience with Agile methodologies; Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Program consultant (SPC) or Release Train Engineer (RTE) certification strongly preferred, some level of SAFe certification required

Experience with consumer-facing digital products, cloud platform technology, and/or advanced analytics enabled products is helpful

Strong meeting facilitation skills

Experience with Systems Thinking

EDUCATION

The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
