Aetna s Public & Labor Renewal Underwriting team is seeking an outstanding leader as the Director, Medical Underwriting. The Public & Labor Renewal Underwriting's mission is to act as a trusted partner in driving retention and in-force growth on our growing book of business. The successful candidate will lead the team in achieving its revenue, margin and customer and membership retention and growth targets by providing financial analysis and strategic support throughout the year. This position is for the East Renewal Team and is located in Hartford, CT

Fundamental Components:· Leads team to achieve team goals through articulation and application of business strategy, initiatives, and underwriting policy · Manages a block of business proactively, balancing membership, revenue growth and profitability objectives; complex / high profile cases and markets or negotiations; workflow and processes to assure timely and accurate deliverables · Works cross-functionally with other constituents on product and pricing strategies · Applies rigorous financial and value analysis to manage and enhance profitability and membership · Develops plans and milestones to achieve diversity in workforce· Executes management responsibilities related to performance management, training and development · Builds effective working relationships across segments and functions · Develops underwriting strategies for the market/segment in concert with other stakeholders (sales, claims, customer service) by using knowledge of industry trends, economy, competition, and business objectives · Resolves complex case situations, assessing customer needs and expectations versus company capabilities and strategies · Grants underwriting exceptions and financial variances within prescribed limits· Leads process improvement initiatives to improve productivity, accuracy, and/or customer service and influences tool development · Manages and/or participates on high visibility and/or complex projects · Negotiates and resolves conflicts using effective oral and written communications

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE desired:· 7+ years of financial underwriting experience with extensive health insurance industry knowledge.· Proven leadership skills and strong cross-functional relationships with sales force and other internal organizations.· Proven ability to anticipate customer needs and negotiate with customers using tact and diplomacy.· Management experience required for supervisory positions


The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
