POSITION SUMMARY

The Database Technical Administrator provides technology strategy, direction, management and support to business systems delivery and maintenance. Designs and delivers technical and application architecture; manages standard technical products lifecycle; provides technical consulting and support to business systems delivery; delivers applied technology solutions.

Fundamental Components:

DATABASE DESIGN:

Participates in or provides input to the logical data modeling process in order to ensure that business requirements are translated into a valid database design.

Employs relational modeling database design principles as necessary in translating a logical model to a physical design that supports the business requirements.

Uses logical data models to create and maintain physical database designs which meet identified business needs and provide adequate safeguards for security and integrity.

Working with a data modeler, leads access modeling sessions to complete physical database design requirements. Leads the physical database design process.

Ensures databases provide required functionality to meet identified business needs.

Ensures databases are high quality, cost-effective, maintainable, and contain solutions that can be leveraged.

Participates in data architecture requirements discussions and recommends usage of appropriate database and data management technology (i.e., DBMS, MQ, Data Propagator, DRDB).

DATABASE IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE:

Implements databases for testing and production.

Monitors capacity and performance for test and production databases to ensure they are highly reliable, efficient, cost effective, and provide the required functionality.

Seeks opportunities to improve database performance by identifying tuning measures and implementing them when appropriate.

Ensures that test and production databases are properly backed up and recovered when necessary.

Develops and maintains database backup and recovery procedures.

Ensures test and production databases are properly maintained; databases are reorganized/resized when necessary and other DBA utilities run when appropriate.

DATABASE NEW PRODUCT/VERSION TESTING & EVALUATION:

Tests upgrades/new releases of database software and related products.

Assesses impacts to customers and the database environment.

Plays major contributor role in the testing and evaluating of new database products and tools. This includes the determination of their applicability to the database environment.

Provides input to database technology direction setting and decision-making by formulating options, identifying issues, and making recommendations.

OPERATIONS

Participation in Production on call rotation is required.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE desired:

Working knowledge of IBM DB2-ZOS, CA IDMS, performance monitors, commands and utilities is required.

Knowledge of IBM WebSphere MQ series, MQ Queue definition administration and operations is desired.

Knowledge of IBM Data Replication products, administration and operations is desired.

EDUCATION

The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
